From May 16th to 24th, the Research Complex at Harwell, near Oxford, hosted an EMBO practical course on high throughput protein production and crystallization. The course was organised and run by the OPPF-UK with the Membrane Protein Laboratory and Diamond Light Source. During the ten day course, research students from laboratories across Europe, carried out expression screening in insect, mammalian and E. coli cells, purification of both soluble and membrane proteins, high throughput crystallization and data collection at synchrotrons. The practical work was focused on the students’ own projects and in one case diffraction quality crystals were obtained by the end of the course. Additional financial support for the course was provided by Instruct, Diamond Light Source and BioStructX.
