The University of Cambridge are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the group of Dr Janet Deane at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research. The team uses multidisciplinary approaches to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disease. They have recently received Wellcome Trust funding to study how altered processing of glycosphingolipids causes mistrafficking of membrane proteins.
An experienced structural biologist is sought to use protein crystallography and/or cryo-EM to study how specific glycosphingolipids interact with membrane protein targets. The ultimate goal of this work is to understand how these complexes may direct trafficking of proteins to the plasma membrane and other cellular compartments. The CIMR is based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and possesses excellent core facilities and laboratory space.
The successful candidates must:
1) hold a PhD in Biochemistry, Structural Biology or a relevant subject;
2) have a proven track record of generating publication-quality data;
3) be able to think creatively and have an enthusiasm for finding new approaches to tackle scientific problems;
4) have good interpersonal skills and be able to communicate their work clearly in both formal and informal settings, and
5) have great attention to detail and excellent record keeping.
This research project will require the candidate to have extensive experience in biochemistry and structural biology. Additional experience in mammalian expression systems, lipid biochemistry or biophysical techniques (such as isothermal titration calorimetry) would be highly advantageous. Due to the multidisciplinary and supportive nature of the laboratory there will be opportunities for candidates to develop their professional skills and to be trained in additional experimental techniques.
