Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the Living Systems Institute, University of Exeter

Exeter University, Exeter, United Kingdom
Application deadline: 14 Oct 2019

The Living Systems Institute (LSI) is a major new initiative by the University of Exeter, designed to promote interdisciplinary research that transcends the boundaries of mathematics, engineering and the biological, medical and physical sciences. Its mission is to analyse living cells and organisms as integrated systems, with the aim of unravelling how diseases disrupt biological processes at the molecular, cellular and organismal level.

The LSI are recruiting a full-time post-doctoral researcher to be based in the lab of Dr. Vicki Gold. This post is available on a fixed term basis, from the 1st of January 2020 until the 31st of December 2020.

The research of the Gold group concerns the central role that molecular machines play in membrane protein transport processes. The successful candidate will join a BBSRC funded project to study the mechanism of the type IV pilus (T4P) in Thermus thermophilus by fluorescence light microscopy (FLM) and cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM). Our institute is equipped with brand new sample preparation laboratories, state-of-the-art imaging facilities for FLM, an automated and cryo-capable EM and a cutting-edge GPU computer cluster for processing. The candidate will also have regular access to our shared GW4-supported 200 kV Talos Arctica with a K2 direct electron detector, and if required, to 300kV Titan Krios microscopes at eBic. The position is available immediately for a fixed term of one year, but may be extended subject to funding.

The post will include:

  • Bacterial cell culture
  • Standard molecular biology techniques e.g. PCR, cloning, fluorescent dye labelling
  • FLM sample preparation and data acquisition
  • Sample preparation for electron microscopy (negative stain and cryo)
  • High-resolution data collection
  • Image processing
