Protein kinases catalyze the transfer of a phosphate group from ATP to one or more target proteins. The human genome encodes over 500 protein kinases, which act as key components in many essential cell signalling pathways. Most kinases are multi-domain proteins and a number of kinase catalytic domains are regulated through specific interactions with other domains or functional protein partners.
