Jobs in Structural Biology and Related Fields

Higher Research Scientist - Protein Expression

National Physical Laboratory , Teddington, United Kingdom
Application deadline: 30 Nov 2020

A permanent position in structural biology is available at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) located in London at Dr Isabel Moraes’ lab.

About the role

You’ll plan and deliver a number of technical activities to take NPL's research to the next level. As the lab pushing boundaries all the time, you'll be expected to acquire new knowledge to find solutions to advance our research. It’s your responsibility to share your learnings so that all benefit, mentoring those with less experience than you. Equally, if commercial opportunities arise from your work, you’ll need to flag these – as this is how new products and services are born. The same can be said for developing partnerships to strengthen our capability. You’ll also act as an ambassador for NPPL's work externally and be willing to promote what the laboratory does. And, as an expert in your field, your technical support will be sought for any bids that may be undertaken.

About You

The BioMetrology group at NPL is a multidisciplinary team working to develop cutting-edge measurement sciences (methods and standards) to understand biological systems and processes from the molecular to the multicellular level. NPL's research responds to the challenges of reproducibility, traceability and comparability in biological R&D, supporting the advance of key national and global priorities including drug and antimicrobial discovery, cell and gene therapies, regenerative medicine and synthetic biology.

As part of a team of biologists, chemists and physicists, you will develop and apply state-of-the-art techniques for proteins expression, purification and biophysical analysis. You will focus on working with bacterial, mammalian and particularly insect cell platforms used within the group.

With a biological sciences related PhD or equivalent work experience, you have a solid background in membrane protein biochemistry and/or biophysics with established and demonstrable skills in molecular biology, protein expression (E. coli, SF9), purification and biophysical characterisation. Additional desirable skills and experience include x-ray crystallography and/or cryo-EM.

You should have a customer focused attitude, ensuring timely delivery of R&D projects with a range of industrial and academic customers. You can work independently, collaboratively, following standard operation procedures as well as health and safety regulations. You apply your skills creatively and flexibly to a range of broader measurement science applications. Your technical expertise should be complemented by excellent communication skills including writing technical reports, scientific papers and delivering oral presentations.
