Excellence Chair in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Structural Biology

Aix Marseille Université, Marseille, France
Application deadline: 30 Apr 2019

The IGS laboratory is a pioneer and a world leader in the study of giant viruses for which we discovered the four known families. A unique strength of the IGS laboratory is the coexistence of a computational biology team and an experimental biology team, allowing efficient and seamless continuity from isolation of new microorganisms to their comprehensive characterization using genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics. The laboratory also has the capacity to determine the 3D-structure of viral proteins of specific interest using X-ray crystallography alone or in combination with Electron Microscopy. The laboratory has 4 main research topics: 1) Microbial/viral genomics, 2) Structural and cellular biology of giant viruses, 3) The biodiversity of giant viruses, and 4) Applied bioinformatics. The approaches combine 1) Sequence determination (complete genome, metagenomics and transcriptomics), 2) Bioinformatics (large-scale data mining, phylogenetic/phylogenomic analyses), 3) Cellular biology with the use and improvement of Acanthamoeba as a new expression system, 4) Characterizations of proteins targeted for their potential biomedical, biotechnological or fundamental interest (X-ray crystallography and other biophysical methods, enzymology, mutagenesis, interaction studies).

The IGS laboratory is recruiting a candidate for a Chair of Excellence from A*Midex (Aix-Marseille University Initiative of Excellence). Full time endowed chairs of excellence are offered to recruit high level professors and researchers contributing to the emergence of world-class research teams, in order to expand the high quality of research at the Aix-Marseille University (AMU) and its partners.
