We are looking for a talented and highly motivated Group Leader (Structural Biology) Reporting to the SVP Protein Sciences, and based at our laboratories on Milton Park, in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, you will be a scientist with structural biology expertise with a background in protein science, X-ray crystallography or single particle cryo-EM. The Protein Science team consists of 35 members of staff: 20 in recombinant protein production and characterisation; and 15 in X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and other biophysics techniques. You will drive the scientific direction of the team, enhancing the future role of structural biology in drug discovery projects.  Excellent leadership skills and high motivation to contribute to integrated multidisciplinary teams are a must, as is an understanding for markets’ and customers’ needs to identify additional business opportunities.  A key role will be develop the members of the team.  A focus on end users’ needs with a mind-set for integrity and openness are essential combined with an eye for detail, driving forward operational efficiency. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the science underlying biology/biochemistry techniques and experiments
Responsibilities may include:
  • Effective leadership of the Structural Biology team in Abingdon in order to achieve project goals within timelines and budget
  • Drives and develops the group scientific and operational strategy to promote strong collaborative and in-house research programs
  • Leading the development program for a diverse research team as it expands into new scientific areas, such as single particle Cryo-EM
  • Responsible for the development of the members of the team; directly responsible for performance management, career development etc
  • Build and maintain professional working relationships with clients to agree and influence scientific direction and project plans and ensure successful outcomes for both parties
  • Effective communication of issues, changes of plan and progress; both externally (client) and internally (within teams and to senior management).
  • Assists in the development and management of budgets; allocates resources, monitors project costs
  • Supports activities such as proposal writing, business development activities and recruitment
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience in a drug discovery environment working on projects from target validation through to preclinical development candidate stage
  • Strong leadership and management skills, and demonstrated success of leading a group of scientists
  • Previous experience of working in a commercial environment; the successful candidate will have the ability to an understand the markets’ and customers’ needs to identify additional business opportunities 
  • High level of engagement, motivation and initiative to work comfortably and collaborate in a matrix environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, technical, and communication skills to be an effective member on cross-functional teams as well as project management skills for timeline tracking and resource planning 
Education and Experience:
  • PhD (or equivalent) in structural biological sciences with demonstrated accomplished research experience
  • At least 5 years of exposure to laboratory/practical work in a research environment; track-record of independent scientific achievement and demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary team setting
