To kick off Instruct sponsored training courses the Training Committee has proposed a first round of courses that will aim to specifically promote the capabilities (or a specific aspect of the capability) of the Instruct Centres. The training courses will be for 15-25 people and will be held during the coming year (2012). Instruct will aim to contribute to 6-8 such training courses a sum of €4000 - 5000, that will fund general course expenses and support the participation of young researchers. The courses will be open to investigators at all levels and will be held at Instruct Centres.

Instruct aims to offer practical courses in the 'core' techniques covered by Instruct, including X-ray, NMR, Electron Microscopy, native mass spectrometry, data analysis and more, with a priority on courses that integrate technologies. In addition, an emphasis of the courses will be given to high-end emerging technologies offered by the Centres. Instruct will support courses held in the countries (UK, France, Italy, Israel, Portugal) which are contributing to Instruct or to students coming from those countries. Applications for support for the first call should be submitted up to the 25th of November for courses being held between 1st February 2012 to 31st March 2013. The committee will also consider allocating part of the resources to short period grants for students to spend research periods in two or more different Instruct Centres.

Course proposals should adhere as far as possible with the criteria defined by EMTRAIN (an EU Innovative Medicines Initiative project, of which Instruct is a member). EMTRAIN is establishing a comprehensive online searchable database (on-course) of training courses that support European life sciences, both for academic and commercial scientists. Instruct has agreed to work with on-course in adopting their criteria of course quality to allow inclusion of our training courses in the database where appropriate. The criteria are set out below:

•          Defined and transparent admission criteria.

•          A predefined set of teaching objectives, leading to defined learning outcomes.

•          Adequate, appropriate and up to date facilities, infrastructure, leadership and competencies available for the support of student learning.

•          Assessment of the students' achievement in accordance with the agreed learning outcomes of the training offered.

•          A system for collecting, assessing and addressing feedback from learners, teachers, technical/administrative staff and programme/course/module managers.

•          Availability of appropriate and updated reference material
