Jobs in Structural Biology and Related Fields

Postdoctoral fellow in Structural Biocomputing

Grenoble, France
Application deadline: 05 May 2018

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK), Rome (Italy), and Barcelona (Spain).

A Postdoctoral position in Structural Biocomputing is available at EMBL Grenoble to contribute to the Crystallography Information Management System (CRIMS) project. CRIMS is a web-based system designed to support high-throughput X-ray crystallography and structure-guided drug discovery. It provides access to experimental design, automated data tracking and resources for real-time data analysis. CRIMS is currently supporting high-throughput screening activities at three EMBL sites (Heidelberg, Hamburg and Grenoble) as well as a number of other laboratories in Europe.

EMBL Grenoble has recently implemented fully automated, high-throughput protein-to-structure pipelines based on the CrystalDirect technology for automated crystal mounting and processing as part of the EC-funded iNEXT project. These pipelines are being applied to large scale, small molecule and fragment-based screening on targets of biomedical relevance. The successful candidate will contribute towards the development of an integrated system for real-time analysis of crystallographic data. The system will enable rapid exploitation of results in the context of fragment-screening campaigns and will integrate information from structural and chemical biology resources like PDBe and ChEMBL. The successful candidate will be based at EMBL Grenoble within the Marquez Team and will cooperate with the Kleywegt, Velankar and Leach groups at EMBL-EBI in Hinxton (UK).

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have completed, or be close to finishing a PhD in Bioinformatics, computer science, structural biology or chemistry and should have experience with professional scientific software development (design, implementation, and maintenance). They should have experience developing web-based applications and have an advanced understanding of programming in Python, PHP 7, relational databases and SQL and JavaScript (ES6, AngularJS…). A background in protein crystallography will be advantageous as will experience with high-level programming languages and cloud computing. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment are important.
